Home and Garden Tools on Utilitoo - Plan Beds, Mulch, and Colors in Your Browser
Introducing Utilitoo's Home and Garden category - color names from photos, plant spacing, mulch volume, and raised bed soil math. Free, browser-local tools for DIY gardeners and decorators.
Most of Utilitoo started as developer utilities: JSON formatters, encoders, regex testers. That is great when you need a hex code from a logo, but not when you are standing in a hardware store trying to describe the color on your living room wall. Home projects use different language - Sage Green, not #9CAF88. Garden projects use different math - cubic yards of mulch, not CSS padding.
We added a Home and Garden category with four free tools that run in your browser. They share the same privacy-first approach as the rest of the site: your photos and measurements stay on your device while you plan.
What is in the Home and Garden category?
The category splits into two groups: decor and colors, and garden planning.
| Tool | Best for |
|---|---|
| Color Name from Photo | Naming a paint, fabric, or flower color from a picture |
| Garden Spacing Calculator | How many plants fit in a bed |
| Mulch Coverage Calculator | Cubic yards and bag counts for mulch |
| Raised Bed Calculator | Soil volume and a simple lumber cut list |
All four are live on Utilitoo today. No account required.
Color Name from Photo - when hex codes do not help
Scenario: You chipped the paint on a bedroom wall. The old can label is gone. You take a phone photo and need words you can search for online or say at the paint counter.
What the tool does: Upload the photo, click the spot you care about, and get the closest human-friendly color name from a large color library - for example Dusty Rose or Warm Ivory. HEX and RGB values are available under "Technical values" if you need them later.
Important caveat: Results are closest matches from a general library, not official brand codes. Lighting, camera white balance, and JPEG compression shift colors. Use the name as a strong starting point, not a guaranteed match to a specific paint SKU.
Privacy: Like our developer Image Color Picker, processing happens locally. Your home photos are not uploaded to Utilitoo servers.
Garden Spacing Calculator - before you buy seedlings
Scenario: You built a 4 by 8 foot raised bed and want tomatoes without overcrowding. Seed packets list spacing in inches, but it is hard to picture how many plants that means in your actual bed.
What the tool does: Enter bed length and width, pick a preset (tomato, pepper, lettuce, and others) or enter custom in-row and between-row spacing, and see plants per row, row count, and total plants. An optional edge margin helps if you leave space along the sides for walking or trellises.
Example: An 8 by 4 foot bed with 24 inch in-row spacing and 36 inch row spacing fits about four tomato plants in a single row - a quick sanity check before checkout at the nursery.
Mulch Coverage Calculator - one trip to the garden center
Scenario: Spring cleanup means fresh mulch on three beds and a tree ring. Bulk mulch is sold by the cubic yard; bagged mulch is sold in 2 or 3 cubic foot bags. You want one estimate before loading the car.
What the tool does: Enter length and width, or switch to total square footage if you already measured the area. Set depth (most beds use 2-4 inches). The calculator returns cubic feet, cubic yards, liters, and an optional bag count rounded up.
Tip: One cubic yard equals 27 cubic feet. Sloped or irregular beds may need a little extra; the tool assumes a flat rectangle.
Raised Bed Calculator - soil and lumber in one pass
Scenario: You are building a first vegetable bed this weekend. You need to know how many bags of compost blend to buy and what length boards to cut for a simple rectangle.
What the tool does: Enter length, width, and fill depth. Get soil volume in cubic feet and cubic yards, an optional count for 1.5 or 2 cubic foot soil bags, and a basic cut list: two long boards and two short boards for the frame.
Example: A 4 by 8 foot bed filled 12 inches deep holds about 32 cubic feet of soil - roughly 1.2 cubic yards or about twenty-two 1.5 cubic foot bags.
The lumber list is a starting sketch. Real builds may need corner overlap, stakes, or brackets depending on your design.
A typical weekend workflow
These tools chain naturally:
- Raised Bed Calculator - size the box and order soil.
- Garden Spacing Calculator - decide how many tomato and lettuce starts to buy.
- Mulch Coverage Calculator - mulch paths and borders around the bed.
- Color Name from Photo - match a trellis or planter color to your deck stain (optional, but satisfying).
You can run the whole sequence in one browser session without installing apps or uploading project photos.
Home and Garden vs other Utilitoo categories
Utilitoo still has Calculators for generic area and volume math. The Home and Garden tools wrap that math in gardener-friendly labels: bag sizes, plant presets, cut lists, and color names instead of raw formulas.
If you are a developer matching brand colors for CSS, keep using Image Color Picker and Color Converter. If you are a homeowner matching a cushion to a sofa, start with Color Name from Photo.
Privacy and limits
Calculators run entirely in your browser. Color Name from Photo lazy-loads a color name library after you upload an image; the eyedropper still reads pixels locally.
These tools give planning estimates, not professional landscaping, structural, or colorimetry advice. Verify critical purchases with physical swatches, local extension guidance, and your own measurements on site.
